After a chequered directorial career, leading to the unspeakable Bennifer vehicle Jersey Girl, Kevin Smith has gone back to basics with this 12-years-on sequel to Clerks - his debut slacker classic from 1994. Our two lethargic heroes Dante and Randal (Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson) have had to get a new job at a burger joint after Randal accidentally burned down the convenience store. It's soon business as usual, though Dante enrages his old buddy by getting an uptight aspirational fiancee: their relationship is a bit like Terry and Bob in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?
There are some funny lines and truly outrageous setpieces, including a display of "inter-species erotica". Randal persistently confuses Helen Keller with Anne Frank, and does a spot-on mime-summary of The Lord of the Rings. I have always been agnostic about Jay and Silent Bob, especially the cutaway reaction-shots of Kevin Smith as Bob does his wacky grin - not funny, surely? But there is an excellent and weirdly gentle romantic performance by Rosario Dawson.
It could be a retrograde step for Smith to revisit his first film, and it feels strange to hang out once again in that 90s world of video-clerk nerd-connoisseurship from which Quentin Tarantino famously sprang. The laughs are still there.
