The Yes Men

The people of Bhopal wept for joy last December when the BBC reported that Dow Chemical, which took over the notorious plant from Union Carbide, intended to offer a $12bn settlement to 120,000 victims of the 1984 industrial disaster. But it was just a prank by a member of the anti-corporate hoaxers, the Yes Men. Did the prank bring the prospect of a genuine settlement any nearer? Did it shame the corporate kingpins? Or simply provide another layer of fog, confusion and acrimony behind which they could retreat further?
I am agnostic about this documentary - filmed before the Bhopal hoax - celebrating the ingenious impostures of the Yes Men. It's funny when they travel to a conference in Finland, posing as members of the World Trade Organisation. One models a gold lamé "manager" suit, with special codpiece with two-way TV screen allowing the wearer to spy on an oppressed workforce.
In a spirit of Swift's Modest Proposal, they address an audience of students, announcing it would be a good plan for the third world to eat reconstituted faeces. The students, magnificently, boo them off the stage. Finally, they announce to gullible suits that the WTO is shutting down because of the social injustice it promotes, and the gullible suits duly say that this is a good thing, mouthing liberal sentiments because the WTO bigwigs have told them it's OK.
Entertaining stuff, but I had the uncomfortable feeling that the stunts were not so much self-defeating as self-cancelling, leaving the corporate structure undamaged in each case. The Yes Men don't seem to be as serious as Michael Moore in his films Roger and Me or Bowling for Columbine, nor as genuinely anarchic as our own Chris Morris. But they're on the side of the angels.
