A new think tank report compiled for the finance ministry shows Poland's entry to the European Union this May will have a considerable effect on the price of ordinary goods. Among the main effects will be price hikes on a range of basic foodstuffs plus housing rents, energy, books, clothes and shoes. Some minor compensation may come in falls in telecom and some household goods and utility costs.
Most of the additional pressure will come in the years 2004-2006, but cigarette prices will continue to accelerate throughout the next five years. By then Poland should be nearing adoption of the euro currency and more stable prices - but the report also shows inflation overall rising to more than four percent annually. That's more than twice most western economies and is likely to be sharper still in Warsaw, so the bottom line: life is gonna get a lot more expensive.
